Steve Kerr (August 2004)
Then: Managing Director and Chief Learning Officer, Goldman Sachs
Now: Provost at Chancellor University and Senior Adviser for Goldman Sachs
Steve Kerr was the first learning leader to officially hold the chief learning officer title. While he is no longer CLO at Goldman Sachs, the Pine Street learning organization he created — “Crotonville on Wall Street” — is still going strong. Recruited into his current role by Jack Welch, Kerr helps to expand Welch’s platform, philosophy and teachings, and still keeps his hand in projects for clients at Goldman Sachs.
Quote: “Learning has changed, and technology is a big part of that. It isn’t so much what you know anymore; it’s what you can look up. There’s a lot less of the teaching knowledge. … It’s about accessing information. … You still do what you did before, but the emphasis is quite different.”
